The Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) performs checks against law enforcement databases. All travellers seeking admission to the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme must obtain electronic travel authorisation via this system before they can be granted boarding. While approval of your ESTA application establishes your eligibility to travel, it does not guarantee your admissibility to the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme. Upon arrival in the United States, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer will inspect you at a port of entry and may determine that you are inadmissible to the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme or for any other reason under United States law.Being deemed ineligible for electronic travel authorisation does not preclude you from applying for a visa to travel to the United States. All information provided by you or a designated third party on your behalf must be true and correct. An authorisation may be revoked at any time and for any reason, such as new information influencing eligibility. You may be subject to administrative or criminal penalties if you knowingly and wilfully make a materially false, fictitious or fraudulent statement or representation in an ESTA application submitted by you or on your behalf.
WARNING: If you are admitted to the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) by a US Customs and Border Protection officer when applying for admission at a port of entry, you may not: accept unauthorised employment, attend school, represent the foreign information media during your visit under the programme. You may not apply for: 1) a change of non-immigrant status; 2) an extension of stay; or 3) an adjustment of status to temporary or permanent resident, unless you are eligible under section 245(c)(4) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Violation of these terms will result in removal.

Step-by-Step Passport Instructions

Sample Photo of a Passport

Include the Entire Page: Capture the complete biographical data page of your passport. Ensure all four edges and corners of the page are fully visible within the frame.

Keep the MRZ Flat and Horizontal: The Machine Readable Zone (MRZ)—the two lines of text, numbers, and chevrons (<<<< ) at the very bottom—must be perfectly horizontal and fill the entire width of your photo.

Eliminate Glare and Shadows: Avoid using a direct camera flash, as reflections on the glossy passport page can obscure critical numbers or letters. Move to a well-lit room with indirect, even light.

Keep it Sharp and Steady: Ensure the text, your printed passport photo, and all data fields are entirely clear and not blurred.

Lay it Flat: Hold or weight down the pages gently if your passport tends to curve or snap shut, but make sure your fingers or objects do not block any text or your face.

Step-by-Step Selfie Instructions

Do NOT Reuse Your Passport Photo: Do not upload a cropped snippet or a scanned copy of your passport picture. The system requires a brand-new, live photo taken at the time of your application. Reusing your passport photo will cause your application to be rejected or canceled.

Use a Plain, Solid Background: Stand in front of a completely flat, light-colored, or neutral wall (white, off-white, or light gray). Ensure there are no patterns, household objects, or other people visible behind you.

Keep an Exact Framing: Position yourself so that only your head, neck, and the tops of your shoulders fill the image frame. Look straight into the camera lens with your head level—do not tilt your face up, down, or sideways.

Maintain a Neutral Expression: Look directly at the camera with both eyes open and your mouth closed. Do not smile, frown, squint, or show your teeth.

Ensure Balanced Lighting: Face toward a natural light source (like a window) to distribute light evenly across your face. Avoid harsh overhead lights, direct flashes, or side lighting that leaves dark shadows under your nose, eyes, or on one side of your face.

Remove Obstructions and Filters: Take off any sunglasses, eyeglasses with reflective glare, hats, masks, or headwear (unless worn daily for religious purposes). Do not apply any digital filters, airbrushing, or beauty edits to the photo.
